“Feminist: A person who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of all genders, regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, religion, ability and sexual orientation.”
I am a feminist because when I walk alone at night I hold my keys like a weapon, because that’s what I learned in self -defense class.
I am a feminist because girls had to take that self-defense class in high school, while the boys were allowed to play soccer outside.
I am a feminist because when I cut my hair short, people asked me if my boyfriend approved of it.
I am a feminist because men are not given custody over children because it’s assumed they won’t be good caretakers.
I am a feminist because often when I state that I am, people assume that I hate men.
I am a feminist because saying ‘I have a boyfriend’ is often the only thing that will stop a person from hitting on you, rather than respecting your rejection.
I am a feminist because men are still scared to open up about their emotions in fear of ‘acting like a girl.’
I am a feminist because as a white girl from a first world country, this is only the tip of the iceberg.
I am a feminist because so many women around the world have it so much harder than I do. Have so much more to fight for than I do.
I am a feminist because over 60 million girls around the world can’t go to school because of their gender.
I am a feminist because over a 100 countries in the world have laws that restrict the type of job a women can do. In 18 of those countries, men can stop their wives from accepting a job offer.
I am a feminist because there are so many things that have happened to me, my loved ones and so many more girls around the world, but that will never be shared out of shame.
I am a feminist, and I’m not saying that because I hate half of this world population, or because I want to have something to blame all my problems on.
#IAmAFeminist because I believe all people should be equal.
